According to US Census data, Suffolk is the 22d most populous county in the United States and Nassau is 26th. The combined total population, 2.75 million people, if treated as a metropolitan area, would rank 18th in the nation, slightly behind San Diego, California, and slightly ahead of St. Louis, Missouri. In spite of that, the IRS has allowed the workforce to atrophy, and then, wonders why rates of collection and audit activity have declined. NTEU is not about to solve this mystery for them...let them figure it out for themselves!
Roughly 100 miles long and 20 miles at its widest point, the two counties cover just under 1,200 square miles.
